Who better to kick things off than The Civil Wars, who most recently have been opening up for Adele on her current tour.

The Civil Wars are a duo comprised of Joy Williams and John Paul White, both of whom had somewhat successful solo careers before teaming up at a songwriting workshop to create songs that are simply magical. One of their early tour dates was at my alma mater in front of maybe a few hundred people. After some help from airplay on Grey’s Anatomy and an appearance on Jay Leno, they’re now playing in front of sold-out stadium crowds.

Cansei de Ser Sexy, aka CSS, were the co-headliners alongside Sleigh Bells when they played at State Theatre in St. Pete last month. The Brazilian band certainly had fun, as did the crowd!

I honestly don’t even know where to start with this show it was so insane. I photographed Sleigh Bells last year when they opened for LCD Soundsystem and got my butt kicked all over the place. See, their only lights are basically strobes that flash to the beat of the music. No constant light to speak of.

Knowing that, I brought an SB-900 this time, powered it most of the way down, and used it for fill light so you can actually see Derek and Alexis.

I didn’t use it all the time though. I turned it off for a while to experiment with getting ambient only.

If you’ve listened to Sleigh Bells, you know that their music is beyond loud, which is why I like this shot so much. It’s just a wall of sound that’s blasting Derek.

Wednesday night The Daylights rolled into St. Petersburg to play a show before they went to sea on VH1′s Best Cruise Ever. These guys have toured with OneRepublic and Katy Perry (they’re one of her favorite bands), and are definitely a band to keep your eye on. Really looking forward to seeing just how huge they become!

(Make sure you watch the video at the end of the post. It went viral last year and has over a million views!)

I was able to hang with them and Andrew Ripp (who opened) while they were goofing around before the show.
